Nominations for HackSoc Committee 2019-2020

All nominations are self-nominations. Positions will be voted on at the AGM on Wednesday 17th April.

Running for President

Colm Scott

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: Volunteered for 2 Securi-Tay’s, year in review, slideshow karaoke, but also talking to society members, no matter what year group, IMO talks, etc, are only 50% of what you can contribute to society.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: I would like to introduce an anonymous monthly review for suggestions, complaints etc. Continue coursework help/social nights, and help lay groundwork for future, bigger, constitutional Securi-Tay’s.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: Prior history with volunteering, event planning/management, and able to call the shots when times get tough plus being an open person. I believe I have the necessities which this role/society require.

Euan Miller

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have done several talks at the society over the years. I have also been a crew member for security for the last 3 years.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: To get the society to focus back on the weekly meeting and to get more graduates back for talks
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I have managed to talk to most people in society and always happy to talk to anyone. Easily contactable and find-able. Have contacts with many of the past committee members.

Jessica Amery

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have delivered a range of talks to the society, alongside offering support to younger members to deliver talks in areas that they are interested in. I have arranged society events, in order to continue previous traditions upheld by the society. I regularly represent the society at conferences around the country, alongside representing the society by presenting around Scotland as part of the CyberBus, an initiative aiming to raise awareness of common cyber security threats.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A:
  1. Encourage members to attend conferences and present what they've learned to the society
  2. Increase Abertay's presence at CTF events by creating specific CTF team's that can compete at events
  3. Arrange regular external speakers in order for members to benefit from a wide range of talks
  4. Ensure that the committee takes on all feedback received and act on it in a pro-active manner
  5. Keep members informed and be transparent as to why a decision has been made by the committee
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I am outgoing and will never settle until something is done to the highest standard. I am not afraid of leadership nor facing any issues that will inevitably come up during the year, I will take responsibility for any errors of judgement. Through attending various conferences and presenting, at a number of events I have gained confidence speaking publicly and I believe this is essential.

Running for Vice-President

Aidan Quinn

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have very frequently attended meetings and social events, including MCing at Securitay 2019 and acting as general crew during the set up and behind the scenes on the day too.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: I plan to work on sense of belonging in the society by developing on communication with members outside of formal correspondence. I also plan to work on making weekly meetings more engaging by scouting more practicals.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I feel I am the best person for this role as I have an excellent sent of communication skills, I am outgoing, confident while talking and pride myself on being very friendly and approachable.

Sarah Cunningham

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A:
  1. Current Hacksoc 18/19 Treasure
  2. Helped run last years Securi-Tay along with Volunteering the year before
  3. Attended multiple Bsides conferences & meetups such as DC44141.
  4. Spoke at the start of Hacksoc meetings along with giving a talk on Lockpicking & Safe Cracking
  5. Helped at external events such as Applicants Day, CyberBus, Christmas Cyber Lectures.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A:
  1. Continue to create a welcoming and comforting environment within the society
  2. Find better ways of receiving feedback from members and improve on actively responding to feedback.
  3. Organise and run more external social events outside of the weekly Hacksoc meetings such as the trip to Bletchley Park or trips to local Security Meetups.

  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: As a current member of the Committee, I understand what is needed to plan/organise weekly Hacksoc meetings along with recognising the time constraints that come with planning Securi-Tay.

Zack Anderson

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A:
  1. I have been a regular attendee of Hacksoc since the second term of my 1st year on the course.
  2. I did a talk bringing attention to the mass data gathering being carried out in India and it's complications in the real world, as well as their ignorance to protect said data.
  3. I have helped out with both Securi-Tay 2017 and 2018 (although not an official volunteer on the day) by helping out with preparations and doing camera work for ““Securi-Nay”” in 2018.
  4. I helped with the organisation of the CyberSecurity Challenge CTF at the university.
  5. I have competed in a few CTF's, recently finishing 9th in the TryHackMe CTF with the help of my team members on ““ShellHell””.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A:
  1. I plan to push the ““talk mentoring”” program discussed at the EGM this year to help newcomers to society and the course build confidence and make them feel more comfortable in Hacksoc.
  2. I plan to tidy up the Slack and make the Wiki easier to use to make them more valuable resources to students in the University and on the course.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A:
  1. I have attended multiple conferences, including BSides Scotland in 2017 & 2018, as well as BSides London 2017 and Securi-Tay since 2017
  2. I have listened to feedback about the society over the years from various perspectives and will take all feedback into consideration.
  3. I feel I can bring a lot to the society & it's members.
  4. I like to think I am an approachable and easy to talk to person.

Running for Treasurer

Cara Smith

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: During my 2-year membership, I have MC’d various talks for securi-tay. While I have not done any solo talks, I have taken part in year in review and have plans to work on a talk for the new term.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: I would like to make it easier for lower years to present talks at meetings by continuing to implement the ideas suggested at the EGM. I would also like to increase our links to other cyber societies.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: The past 2 summers I have worked full time in the finance department of a local company. I can work with most people without issue. I may be quiet, but I can still make my opinion heard.

Hannah Michael

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have represented the society through the CyberBus events, and through this participated putting the Abertay Hackers sticker on the John O’Groats sign. I have represented the society by attending conferences, and volunteered at our own for the past 3 years. I have also co-presented a Surviving Hacking talk at the start of my second year.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: If elected I would aim to make the society budget more transparent and allow society funds to be more accessible to members. As treasurer, I would aim to be approachable meaning if members have any queries or requests regarding funds I would always be open to help.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I have had experience organising events that involve handling money such as Shindig, fundraisers, and other events. Through planning Shindig through the SA I have had previous experience handling fund requests.

Izzy Ambrose

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I am an active member of the society, and although I haven't presented yet I have attended almost every hacksoc meeting since joining the society. I have also made an effort to attend events outwith the weekly meetings.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: My main priority to continue making members of the society feel welcome and comfortable. I would also like to get more people involved in contributing to the wiki by having a list of ideas to write about. Finally, I'd like to make members - particularly first years - more aware of the money available to them for projects.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: As treasurer, I would be comfortable with dedicating a good portion of my time to handling my responsibilities. I find it easy to get on with people as I'm a friendly person. When working in a group I am organised, efficient and communicative which would be useful for working with the other commitee members and the society.

Jordan Gribben

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have turned up to every hacksoc meeting including the social after. I have also done a talk for the society about article 13 during year in review with a future talk planned.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A:
  1. I would be more active on the societies social media.
  2. Aim to get tickets to conferences such as BSides for society members.
  3. Aim to get more workshops for the society.
  4. Ideas to get more people to do talks.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I feel I would be best for this position as I have had previous experience handling money assisting with cash ups at the end of work days as well as being able to work well with spreadsheets.

Running for Secretary

Ben Hovell

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I have been an active member of the society for the past two years. Along with attending all social events and 2 years of Securi-Tay conferences.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: Speak to members more to get a better idea of what people want. I also want to be more transparent within the society as I feel this can be worked on to allow us to grow together as one group rather than there being a divide between committee and society, therefore the committee can interact better within the society to cope with their needs.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: I believe I know more about the society as I have been coming since my first week of first year. I know what works and what does not

Sam Heney

  • Q1: What have you contributed to the society?
  • A: I was part of a three person talk on CTFs and delivered a very well received workshop on game hacking. Volunteered at Securi-tay this year. I've contributed a fair bit to the wiki, including a whole new guide on homelabs. I am also active in the slack, and active generally in the Hacksoc community.
  • Q2: What is your plan to advance the society?
  • A: Host regular CTF events and generally organise more social events for the society outwith the wednesday Hacksoc meetings. Bring up a list of talk ideas every week to try and encourage more people to create talks.
  • Q3: What makes you the best person for this position?
  • A: Experience in the technical skills required to be secretary, such as website hosting and back-end development. I am good at quickly picking up new skills required for the role that I don't already have. I am a confident public speaker. Finally, I'm a fairly inoffensive person so people find it easy to get along with me and vice versa.
